All gyms are equal, but some are more equal than others

Image

We all know that feeling when your jeans start to get that little too tight, the bathroom scales start saying things you don’t want to hear and you finally decide its time to get back in the gym. It’s like the first day back at school, yes you have been before and think you know what your in for but this place is new, so are the faces, and all the equipment looks more like medieval torture devices rather than a way to get fit. You may even have switched from a brand new technology filled gym equipped with everything from saunas to a juice bar and are now stepping foot in a room full of heavy iron bars chipped with rust. Trading in a beautiful blonde spinning instructor for the vest wearing cousin of a gorilla. Either way you’re there for one reason and that is to work out. Continue reading

A vacation from fitness

Image

Let me just apologise upfront for my leave of absence. Where have I been I hear you ask? Well I have been on holiday and not only have I been on holiday from work I thought I would take a little mini holiday from my attempts at a healthy lifestyle. I can hear your collective gasps of shock however I wanted to see if I still felt like I was doing the right thing and on the right path. In someway I wanted to see if I was missing out by not having my old life of over indulgence and lack of any exercise. For fear of spoiling the rest of the article the answer is no I definitely do not miss it and after just one week I felt awful. Let me explain. Continue reading

Health and the people around you

Image

When I started this blog I thought that I was only doing it for myself. Making what I was trying to achieve a very public affair so as to have much greater accountability and hopefully stick to my goals. I am currently doing much better than I normally would and haven’t, as of yet jumped off the health train, well not to far. But what has made this whole thing worthwhile is the effect it has had on the people around me. Continue reading

Product review – Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Casein

Product review – Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Pure Casein

So I decided to change things up from just my ordinary whey protein and add in some of optimums Nutrition’s Casein protein.

Casein protein has a much slower release than whey protein and slowly feeds your muscles after you have taken it as opposed to in one big hit. Whilst rapid proteins are ideal for pre and post work out shakes, Casein protein works best during the other parts of the day between meals and over night to keep your muscles ticking over. Exercise, Are you getting enough?

Image

Exercise

Diet and exercise, the two equal parts of any healthy lifestyle. So far I have mainly looked at diet so to change things up I have decided to look at the fitness side of my life.  As I have mentioned before this has never been as much of an issue for me as following a healthy diet has been. For the most part I have always done some form of exercise and on top of that I have a very active job. This is partially the reason I have gotten away with such a bad diet for so many years. I balanced out my unhealthy eating by simply working out more. Not exactly the balance I was looking for but it was working to a certain degree. Generally it was giving me the desired aesthetic results that I wanted but it didn’t make me feel great on the inside and I could never achieve the optimum levels of fitness or appearance that I was aspiring for. I could get down to a low body fat that most people would be happy with but it would mean putting some serious hours of effort in at the gym to get there. Continue reading

Theres always an excuse

Image

There’s always an excuse

You know the feeling you have when its been a long day and you just don’t fancy going to the gym. You can always find an excuse. My back is a bit sore so maybe I shouldn’t risk injuring it. Or Maybe I will just move my rest day up to today. The same goes for nutrition. You have had a hard day so you deserve that last piece of cake in the fridge or to have the comfort food you are craving. We have all been there and its easily done. These excuses however, if left to go unchecked can start to mount up and when you add them all together it is quite often what makes the difference between what you look like and feel like now and what you aspire to Continue reading

The breakfast of champions

Image

The breakfast of champions

Everyone says it’s the most important meal of the day. It’s a common held belief that everyone seems to know and yet many seem to ignore. Me being one of them. When I was younger it was never an issue. I was more than happy to hoover up whichever sugar coated cereal landed in my bowl, or on the lucky occasions when it was a bacon sandwich it would hardly touch my plate before it was gone. It was almost a ritual. I would wake up drink a cup of tea eat my cereal. Get washed and ready and then run for the school bus. I didn’t even think twice about it. It wasn’t so much that it was easy I just never really thought about it. I didn’t have to. As I got older though mornings just seemed to get harder. Getting out of bed became a chore and I would remain in there for as long as I possibly could. With less time in the mornings breakfast became progressively faster and smaller until it no longer existed at all. Even the cup of tea was quite often non existent anymore. Continue reading

The dangers of catching some rays

Image

The dangers of catching some rays

This post is slightly off topic but I thought I would post it anyway as it’s the summer and a lot of people will be enjoying the sun and trying to get that all important tan. I, like most people, love the sun and I really love being out side. It is one of the main reasons that I don’t work in an office. For any one that doesn’t know me I work on board yachts. Aside from being great fun it means that I am outside all day everyday. So whether I want to or not I soak up a lot of the suns rays and I am also very aware of how this affects my skin and my day to day health Continue reading
